DESCRIPTION:
The
American Red Cross is a member of the International Red
Cross and Red Crescent Movement, a not-for-profit organization
committed to helping people, especially after disasters.
Though chartered by Congress to provide relief services,
the Red Cross isn't a government agency. Its staff is
made up largely of volunteers -- nearly 1.4 million of
them. Aside from providing relief to victims of more than
60,000 natural and man-made disasters nationwide each
year, the Red Cross teaches CPR, first aid, water safety,
and AIDS awareness courses; provides counseling and emergency
message transmission for US military personnel; and maintains
the nation's largest blood bank.
Every
day, the American Red Cross responds to emergencies down
the street...across the country...around the globe. It
may be half a million devasted diaster victims or one
sick child in need of lifesaving blood. Few Americans
are untouched by Red Cross services--all made possible
by volunteers who discover that helping others also makes
them feel good about themselves. Those who wear the Red
Cross emblem--beloved symbol of hope and help--come from
all walks of life. They're all ages. Everyone has something
special to offer..... Including YOU.
